Today, Rabun County is a popular stop for outdoors-minded people and people who just want to relax and enjoy the spectacular views. Our many miles of hiking trails, lakes, rivers, and National Forest bring hundreds of thousands of people every year to this peaceful and quiet corner of heaven. The Chattooga River offers challenging whitewater and the Blue Ridge Mountains offer exhilarating hikes and great mountain biking. Fishing the streams and rivers of the area has also been a popular pastime for many, many years. Horseback riding, canoeing, golfing, skiing, and many other activities are all within minutes of the GML. There are numerous antique and specialty shops in Clayton and in the nearby towns of Dillard, Sky Valley, Franklin NC, and Highlands NC. Though I hesitate to say there is lots of “fine dining” in Clayton there are about 15-20 restaurants in and around Clayton, many of which have great food for reasonable prices. The nicest of these is the Buck Creek Tavern in downtown Clayton. Mama G’s also serves up great pizza and other Italian specialties. The Grape and Bean has great sandwiches and a surprisingly good wine selection. And of course, there is the obligatory southern restaurant, Waffle House! There are menus to most of the restaurants in the area at the GML so you can quickly decide what suits your taste… Or simply visit the grocery store and cook out on our grill!
